You wouldn’t think Westerns and mysteries have much in common with New Wave pop/ska. But I see a connection between my favorite band, the still-thriving ’80s English institution Madness, and what I write. Now the fine folks at the Stateside Madness blog have kindly opened their cyber-doors to this old Nutty Boy so I could explore how a group of North London popsters could inspire (in a roundabout way) Holmes on the Range and more. Check it out!
Western Fiction Review has weighed in on Hired Guns. Their verdict: “If you like traditional westerns that are packed with tough, brutal action, mixed with elements of humour and have plots that will keep you guessing until the end, then look no further than Hired Guns.” Huzzah! Sounds like a rave to me! Hired Guns comes out Sept. 17.

I had a great time chatting on “The Creative Writing Life Podcast” about outlining, Westerns, “Planet of the Apes,” my unlicensed “Star Trek” vs. “Alien” crossover and why so many movies today feel so danged long.
